Don’t stare at me: A ‘Reply’ for the voiceless- Sooraj Sukumar Nair ’s ‘Reply’, a short film of less than four minute duration, is a voice for the voiceless.
A girl in modern outfits sits alone in one silent corner of a park. A young man who walks past her is quick to judge ‘she is available’, attempting every way to ‘try his luck’. He starts with a few piercing glances and then moves on to initiate a conversation. She says nothing other than engrossing herself in a sketch she has been indulging in right from the beginning. Not because she does not know what to say, but she is born deaf-mute!
The director recollects a real-life incident that has prompted him to make 'Reply'. “Once I was sitting in an office. A girl from another state, dressed in a stylish way, walked in. A man who sat next to me wowed at her, passing a lewd comment, ‘she is available’. I know that she is well-behaving and has come here for her studies. In Malayali’s eyes, she is ‘sexy’, that’s it. Had she heard him, she’d have reacted. But what if it was a girl who could not speak or hear? I want my film to speak for them,” Sooraj Sukumar Nair says.
Devika and Karthik form the cast. Karthik could soon be seen making his big screen debut with the movie ‘Vakku’ directed by Sujith S Nair . In the film bankrolled by Sandhya Kumari & Sujith S Nair, Gopika Sooraj has handled the department of makeup and costumes. Arun T. Sasi is the director of photography. Music is by Prashanth Mohanan (Music Director of Epic Album Gajam)
The film released couple of week back on YouTube is getting good response.
